We live in a world that requires perfection. Perfect bodies, perfect minds, perfect skills. And into that world come people whom many consider imperfect, lacking, incapable of contributing. But in the past thirty years of raising my own special needs child, and working with many others, the one thing I can say is that their imperfections are perhaps part of what makes people with mental retardation an essential part of our world.
They aren’t going to give us the next cure for disease. Nor will they invent the next streamline airplane, rocket, or military defense equipment. But they contribute. They contribute in ways we may not realize.
This website is dedicated to the many people with mental retardation whom I have had the privilege to know and work with over the past twenty-five years. And to my son. Who is often my inspiration and an inspiration to others who know him
